  • World Book Day and Readathon

    3rd March 2016

    World book day fever hit John Whitgift Academy on 3rd March when staff dressed as their favourite literary characters to help celebrate authors, illustrators, books and reading as part of this annual global event. Pupils were invited to take part in a quiz to guess who was who, with many wierd, wild and wonderful answers being given!

  • Box Clever visit JWA

    Box Clever visited John Whitgift Academy on Wednesday 24th February to perform Romeo and Juliet for all of year 10 and a selection of year 9 students. This was to support their study of Shakespeare at GCSE and enabled them to partcipate in workshops to develop their understanding of the text.

    JWA were invited to partake in a meet and greet with the current England rugby squad at Twickenham on Friday 29th January. The following students were selected to attend and represent us:

  • Students raise the roof!

    18th December 2015

    JWA students, under the fantastic guidance of Miss Thomas, held their annual Christmas concert on Tuesday. There was a packed house for the event which is always a true credit to all those involved.


    The evening showed the true talent of the students involved, with many showing vocal talent along with the ability to play instruments to a high standard. Family and friends supported the event and praised all the hard work that had gone before by staff and students.

    On Tuesday 8th December 2015, 9 Year 11 students went down to the Fortune Theatre, London to see the uber-scary 'Woman in Black' as part of their GCSE Drama coursework.


    Despite watching the play from behind their coats, all students had a great time and have taken lots from the play in order to write a great theatre review.

  • Amazing John Whitgift Academy Rugby Team

    On Tuesday 8th December John Whitgift were hosts to Havelock Rugby team.

    JWA put out a very strong squad for the game even without the likes of Adam Neilson playing due to injury. Students from both year 9 and 10 arrived for the game and ensured that they prepared well in anticipation of a difficult match. There was strength not only in numbers but also an extremely well balanced split between the forwards and backs.

  • Year 9 visit to Humberston beach

    23rd November 2015

    Year 9 Geographers have been studying fieldwork skills in preparation for their GCSE fieldwork. In order to practice these skills they were invited on a fieldtrip to Humberston beach this month. The purpose of the day was to assess the impact of the coastal flood defences through surveys and measurements. Students were measuring the influence of the groynes on the beach and exploring the strength and direction of long shore drift.  The day was extremely useful in preparation for the rigours of the new GCSE

  • Leicester Tigers trip- 13th November

    Staff and 11 students had the opportunity to visit the home of Leicester Tigers on Friday night leaving JWA at 4pm ready for a 7.45pm kick off. Although not returning until the early hours of Saturday it was a fabulous trip and a fantastic for the students to see top class rugby.


    The reigning French Champions visited Welford Road as Leicester Tigers kicked off their European Rugby Champions campaign against Stade Francais.

    ROAD TO RIO- Duncan Goodhew MBE visits JWA

    On the 11th November, Premier Sport,  the UK’s leading provider of physical education and sports coaching services to schools, had their official launch in North East Lincolnshire and it was our honour to hold it here at John Whitgift Academy.

    Along with Premier Sports staff came Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE, who won the 100 metre breaststroke at the 1980 Olympic Games, and was on hand to give gold medal winning advice to the children. The purpose of the visit was to work with years 7 and 8 stud

  • Box Clever Theatre Company visit

    13th October 2015

     On Thursday 8th October Box Clever theatre company came in to perform 'The Hate Play' - a play about the dangers of turning a blind eye to bullying - for Year 8 and Year 9 students. The play was energetic and informative, and many students picked up on the important message it communicated. Twenty-eight year 9 students then took part in a workshop, where they had the change to write their own monologues for one of the five professional actors to perform. It was a very enjoyable experience for all involved!

  • The Opera comes to JWA

    7th October 2015


    On the 23rd & 24th September 2015, 51 year 8,9,10 students were involved in workshops with the Garsington Opera company. They were chosen due to their exceptional progress in performing arts lessons & involvement in extra curricular activities. Working in MAPAS, thanks to Sue Baker, the students were put through their musical & dramatic paces. The workshops were based on Mozart’s very well-known opera “Cossi fan tutte” Over the 2 days students worked with 4 members of the Opera company on a range of music

    Saw JWA who represented North East Lincs (NEL) take the title of County champions, beating Hull, East Riding and North Lincoln.

    Game one was against Hull who were tournament favourites to win. Where we displayed great movement up and down the court, getting back into defence quick to shut out Hull's attack.

  • RAF Coningsby trip

    On Friday 23 January 14 students and 3 members of staff attended RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.



    In June 2005 the Squadron officially moved to its home base at RAF Coningsby and by July it was teaching new pilots for 17(R) Squadron on a formal course. Bucking the trend of recent squadron disbandments, 29(R) Squadron officially ‘stood up’ for operational service on 4 November 2005.     With 6 - wins, 1 - draw 0 - loses we are the tournaments undefeated champions winning all three games last night has sent us to the next round, The Humber Games.


    First games performance was a 10 - 4 win over OWA which was a vital win to send us to the top of the table. Sealing the win on this game was from Charlie Ledbury and Taelan Reynolds by sinking a 3pointer each.
