Mr R Spendlow, Principal, BA Hons
I started teaching History and R.E back in 1996 in Preston in Lancashire. Then I moved to the Midlands, Leicester and Birmingham, being a Head of Department, then Head of Faculty. After many years in those roles, I then moved to North Devon as an Assistant Headteacher, starting in 2005 and staying until 2013. It was then, I was given the opportunity to move to JWA as Vice Principal and then Principal, a role I am very proud of and enjoy thoroughly.
Miss C Glaves, Associate Vice Principal, BA Hons
My teaching career began after completing my PGCE at the University of Hull, where I trained as a Modern Languages and PE teacher. During my career, I have worked as Head of Department, Curriculum Enrichment Coordinator and Assistant Principal at the former Whitgift School. My responsibilities and experience have been broad and varied, working in both curriculum and pastoral roles, leading to my current position of Associate Vice Principal.
Most recently, I undertook a secondment within Delta to work as Acting Head of Academy at Weelsby Primary. This afforded me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge of the invaluable work undertaken by our primary colleagues. I am proud to have worked alongside a fantastic team, achieving rapidly improving outcomes for pupils, with an increase of 49% in this summer's KS3 SATS.
I am passionate about working with young people, to ensure that they achieve their full potential in life, and to continue to work towards John Whitgift Academy becoming an outstanding academy.

Mrs S Clark, Assistant Principal, BA Hons English & History
After having worked in a wide range of industries locally, in 2003 I began a graduate teacher training programme at a local school, fuelled by my passion for English.
I have been extremely privileged to have been involved in all aspects of Teaching and learning for most of my career. I began to work within a T&L team as an NQT and then as a Lead Teacher. I qualified as an Advanced Skills Teacher in 2013 and was also fortunate to work with a teacher training agency as a tutor and trainer. Supporting trainee teachers in many roles and working with staff in all areas of the curriculum has been enriching and inspiring.
Working with the Senior Leadership Team at JWA since 2016 has been challenging, exciting and rewarding. I am driven to continually develop teaching and learning and to support staff to ensure that our students achieve above and beyond their potential in a positive, collaborative and supportive environment.
Mrs M Smiech, Assistant Principal, BSc Hons
After leaving Sheffield Hallam University in 2002 with a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, I then completed my Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Mathematics, which gave me my first step into teaching, including a practice placement at John Whitgift Academy 2003. So after going full circle, I’m back there and it’s better than ever. I have worked in several academies across North East Lincolnshire and have made significant contributions to students achieving their GSCE in Maths and other linked courses. I have also helped to develop teachers and departments within academies, something I’m really proud of, especially when you see teachers develop into confident leaders.
I have worked as a Director of Mathematics whereby the academy I orked with had its highest maths results on record, even to this day. I have worked as a part-time teacher after maternity leave, then was given a fantastic opportunity to become a mathematics consultant developing a department from scratch and giving it its highest maths results on record. I then joined John Whitgift Academy as an Assistant Principal leading in Mathematics. I’m very proud to work at JWA and work with an exceptional team of leadership, middle leaders and of course, the maths team.
In 2017 we achieved record breaking results which surpassed those locally and across the Delta Academies Trust and then in 2018, achieved beyond our expectations with even more record breaking results.
