Students show respect on Battlefields trip

“Students were up bright and early to set off for Dover at 4am. We spent a full day travelling and spent an enjoyable first night bowling. Day 2 was spent visiting various places of interest, starting off with Dixmuide or the Trenches of Death where we were able to see the size and layout of trenches. The next part of the day was spent at Langemark German War Cemetery where we were able to make comparisons with the Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Cemetery. We visited the Flanders Field Museum in Ypres where students were able to select a soldiers story and follow it through the war – some students found soldiers who had been part of the Grimsby Chums pals battalion. While in Ypres we visited a traditional Belgian chocolate shop. The culmination of the visit was attending and taking part in the Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate. Glenn, Jess and Leo were chosen to lay the wreath during the ceremony and did a fantastic job in front of a large crowd of people. I was very proud of JWA students for their exemplary respect and interest shown throughout the visit.”
