Year 7 girls represent Grimsby Town at U13 Girls Utilita Cup

During the Autumn Term, John Whitgift Academy’s Year 7 girls were crowned North East Lincolnshire champions with a convincing performance in the area football tournament, winning all their matches.

As a result they were extremely proud to be selected by Grimsby Town Football Club to be their representatives in the U13 Girls Utilita Cup- a prestigious tournament with the final being played at Wembley Stadium.

Our predominantly Year 7 Girls team were up against some stiff competition from teams representing Notts County, Hull City, Burton Albion, Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town, Derby County and Leicester City with a mixture of Year 7/8 Girls in their squads.

Doncaster Rovers hosted the event where the standard of football was obviously extremely high, with the best players from our region battling for a place in the Northern Finals (the winners of which would head to Wembley to play the Southern Area finalists).

A victory over Mansfield Town and draws against Burton, Hull, Doncaster and Leicester demonstrated the girls were certainly not out of their depth against such strong opposition finishing 6th overall.

The girls had an amazing day and will be hoping that they can qualify again, next year, using these experiences to inspire even stronger performances moving forwards.
